The world champion D Gukesh crashed into the defenses of compatriot Leon Luke Mendonca in the ninth round to jump to the only leadership in the Tata Steel Master. On a day when R Praggnanandhaa lost his first game against Dutch general manager Anish Giri, veteran P Harikrishna also found himself under the center of attention, falling to the Russian turned into Vladimir Fedoseev. “I am happy to have played a good game today and there are still four rounds, so I’m not thinking about the classification. I’m happy how I’m playing,” Gukesh said after his game.
With the victory, Gukesh took his account to 6.5 points of a possible nine and a half points ahead of Uzbek Nodirbek Abdusattorov and Russian became Slovenian Fedelves, both with 6 points.
Praggnanadhaa in 5.5 points shares the fourth place and remains to be seen if things will improve for the Indian.
