Tensions between the United States and Colombia have intensified after the president of the United States, Donald Trump, imposed tariffs and sanctions on Colombia for refusing to accept military deportation flights. Trump warned about the increase in tariffs on Colombian products such as coffee. In retaliation, the Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, imposed coincident tariffs on US imports and prohibited US military planes that lead to migrants deported to landing in Colombia. Petro offered civil flights for deportations provided that migrants were treated with dignity. The United States responded suspending the issuance of visas in Bogotá and imposing restrictions on Colombian officials. Latin American leaders criticized Trump’s aggressive deportation tactics, with Brazil condemning the treatment of deported citizens. Meanwhile, more than 1,000 migrants began a trip to the American border despite the closest policies and canceled asylum programs. N18OC_WORLD N18OC_CRUX
