New Delhi:
The center announced today that US authorities have told them that there are 487 alleged Indian citizens with “final elimination orders.” This announcement comes in the context of a political row on 104 Indian migrants who were sent back to India, chained and chained, in a US military plane C-17 on Wednesday.
“They have told us that there are 487 alleged Indian citizens with final elimination orders,” said Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.
An American military plane that transported migrants landed in Amritsar, marking the first mass deportation under the administration of President Donald Trump. The deportees, who had tried to enter the United States through illegal channels, were stacked on an airplane and, according to the reports, were chained and restricted throughout the flight, only to be released when they arrived in India.
“Its legal position and its status to the extent that it is the United States justice system, we have information on the number of worried immigrants. We are working with such numbers available to us,” said Misri.
In the US, using military planes to deport the Indians, the Foreign Secretary said: “This particular deportation is something different compared to previous flights. In the US system itself, it was described as a national security operation “
Center vs. opposition on deportation
Deportation, and the way it was carried out, became a point of political inflammation with the opposition asking why the center did not intervene to recover them in their terms.
The center defended its position, citing international obligations, but opposition leaders pointed out that the Indian government had previously organized special flights to evacuate its citizens in the crisis areas.
The Minister of External Affairs, S Jaishankar, speaking in Rajya Sabha yesterday, defended the government’s position, arguing that each country has the obligation to recover its nationals if they are found that they live illegally abroad. He also said that deportations were carried out by the United States immigration and customs control (ICE) under standard procedures since 2012.
“The deportation of the United States is organized and executed by the ICE authorities. Its standard operational procedure foresees the use of restrictions, but they have informed us that women and children are not restricted,” Jaishankar said.
He added that the government was involving with US authorities to ensure that deportees were not mistreated.
“It is of our collective interest to promote legal mobility and discourage illegal movement,” he said.
New law for migrants
The center is “seriously considering” promulgating a new law to establish a framework that promotes “safe, orderly and regular migration for employment abroad.”
The bill titled Tentatively ‘Mobility (facilitation and well -being) abroad, 2024’ arose from a report presented in Lok Sabha by the Permanent Parliamentary Committee of External Affairs, headed by the deputy of the Congress Shashi Tharoor, on Monday.
United States response
The United States defended its decision to send migrants to a C-17 military plane.
The United States Embassy in India said that “enforcing the laws of immigration of our nation is of vital importance for the national security and public safety of the United States.”
