Prayagraj:
Thirty people were killed in the stampede that happened just before dawn in the place of Maha Kumbh in the Prayagraj of Uttar Pradesh, the police chief who supervises security at the mass religious meeting told journalists today.
Twenty -five bodies have been identified, said police officer Vaibhav Krishna to journalists, adding that 60 were injured. Many have been hospitalized.
The announcement of victims occurred hours after local reports and Prayagraj residents published on social networks about deaths in the stampede. However, the reports were not consistent with the death toll.
The prior stampede at dawn in the Sangam del Maha Kumbh area exploded after many pilgrims pushed so that the space was given a sacred hall on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya, one of the most auspicious days.
Many people began to break the barricades before the stampede occurred, said the police officer.
Sarojini, a Karnataka resident who came to take a dip in Maha Kumbh, told PTI news agency: “We came in a lot of 60 people in two buses. There were nine people in our group. Suddenly he had pushed the Crowd, and we are trapped.
A woman in a local hospital, whose child was injured, said there was nowhere to go when people began to push the massive crowd. “Some people who pushed us laughed while we begged kindness towards children,” he told PTI.
Krishna, the General Inspector in General (DIG) of Maha Kumbh, said the situation is under control.
President of the Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad, Mahant Ravindra Puri, who was heading towards Triveni Sangam for Amrit Snan, said thousands of saints and Naga Sadhus came with him. “We are going for the Amrit Snan … we will vacate the Ghats very quickly so that all devotees who have come here can give sacred greeting.”
Digambar Naga Baba Chidanand Puri of Panchayati Niraranjani Akhara told Ani news agency after taking Amrit Snan that after the incident, the people of Niranjani Akhara come in small numbers to take the Holy Dip.
